Cold open — a stolen name
Production ident: Way of the Jaded Fist
Victim: Ah, no, no. Please, just don’t hurt me.
Bandit: Quiet, fool. We’ll decide what to do with you soon enough.
Victim: Okay. All right.
Bandit: Now hand over that sack of coin or Sanjo will split you open, understand?
Victim: Spirit of the rift, protect me. Sirs, please, that’s all the money I have.
Bandit: And now it’s mine. Clean him up, Sanjo. It’s time to collect the tribute due to a master martial artist like myself. Fear me, for I am Kai-Lung.
Introduction
Raymond Getty — show announcer: You’re listening to Way of the Jaded Fist, a proud part of Project Zion Theatre. I’m your show announcer, Raymond Getty. Hiya! Well, the Himalayan rift, a place of stark beauty and hidden dangers. Towering peaks pierce the sky, their jagged edges casting long shadows across the valleys below. Ancient trails wind through treacherous passes, connecting remote villages and forgotten monasteries. Here, in this rugged land, Danny Rose journeys towards his meeting with Marta, but fate, as it often does, has other plans for him. Thanks for listening, and enjoy the show.
Lani and the road to Oakhaven
Danny: Boy, the air is thinner up here, but the view is breathtaking.
Lani / Danny — exchange: Traveler. Hmm? You look lost, or perhaps just admiring our mountains. Good morning. Morning. Oh, well- Always nice to see a new face.
Lani: I’m Lani, village ambassador of Oakhaven.
Danny: Danny Rose. Pleased to make your acquaintance, Lani. And to answer your question, I suppose it’s a bit of both. I really need to see if I can find a, uh-
Lani / Danny — overlapping dialogue: A shortcut? No, that is- A hidden spring? That is to say- The best view of the sunrise? Wow, you are fast.
Lani: I know all the secrets of these paths, and you look like you could use some supplies.
Danny: Well, seeing as how I can’t remember what I was going to say, yeah, sure, we’ll go with that. You know, I certainly wouldn’t turn down water.
Lani: All right then. It’s settled. You’re in luck. Oakhaven is just over that ridge. Not much to look at, but we have the freshest water and the tastiest. Well, we have food.
Danny: Hey, that’s the best kind, right?
Lani: And I can offer you a discount. Best prices this side of the rift.
Danny: Did she just say discount? That’s my favorite seven-letter word. Oh, um, okay, that’s, that… Discount, wow.
Lani / Danny — exchange: Yep. Seeing as how you’re new and all. That would be very generous of you. Of course. We always help travelers. It’s, it’s good for business. Come on, follow me. I’ll show you the way. It’s not far, and the path is much easier with a guide.
Danny: All right then. Lead the way, Lani, and thank you.
Lani: Sure thing. Welcome to Oakhaven. It may not be Harbortown, but it’s home.
Danny: It has its own charm.
Lani: Oh, it does. That’s our market square, where we trade with neighboring villages, and over there is the elder’s house, where she guides our community. Later I’ll take you to the parlor and we can share some…
The village under pressure
Bandit: Idiot. How could you be so clumsy? How? Now you owe us double. Understand? Double.
Girl: Apologies, sir. Have mercy. It’s not as if-
Danny: Now, now. Were you really gonna slap that little girl because she accidentally knocked over your ugly vase?
Bandit: What the… How’d you-
Danny: Were you really going to? I didn’t think you were, but I’m just asking for clarification.
Bandit: Who do you think you… Let go of me.
Lani: Wow, you’re fast.
Danny: Nah, this guy’s just really slow.
Bandit: Hey, you little punk, let me go this instant or this whole village will be sorry.
Danny: Yeah, sorry gramps, I don’t understand your accent.
Lani: Uh, Mr. Rose?
Bandit: You, get him off of me, now.
Danny: Oh, no, not until you answer my question, old man.
Lani / Danny — exchange: Danny. What?
Ming — impersonating Kai-Lung: I’d listen to the little girl, Mr. Hero. You’re only making things worse for all these hardworking people here.
Danny: Noted. And you are?
Ming — impersonating Kai-Lung: Completely and utterly out of your league, Mr. Hero. They call me the Iron Fist. I am Master Kai-Lung.
Danny: Wait, what?
Bandit: You deaf or something, stranger? He’s the strongest warrior in all the land. Hell, in all the world.
Danny: If Master Kai knew that these idiots were impersonating him, he’d probably burn this village down. Well, that’s neither here nor there at the moment.
Ming — impersonating Kai-Lung: Ha. Good, you let him go. Probably the smartest thing you done today, Mr. Hero. The next smartest thing you will do is leave this village and never come back, ever.
Lani: Oh no, if Mr. Rose leaves the village, it’ll leave us at the mercy of these bandits again. Master Lung, please allow him to leave in the morning. I need his help counting out the day’s tribute for you and your band
Ming / Lani — exchange: Tribute, you say? Say less. He may stay the night, but he must go by first light. Understood, little girl? Idiot. We look like we’re the same age, he and I. We understand. Thank you for your mercy, Master Lung.
Oakhaven’s welcome
Narrator: Way of the Jaded Fist. The heart of Oakhaven Village was abuzz with rare excitement. Travelers, including the curious Danny Rose, had been invited to witness a small ceremony, a gesture of welcome from the villagers. Lani, ever the enthusiastic ambassador, stepped forward to explain.
Lani: Attention. Attention, everyone. All righty then, a quick word from me, and we’ll dive right into this lovely, uh, this lovely stew the kitchen crew churned out. Welcome, honored guests, to Oakhaven. We know the Himalayan Rift has a reputation, tales of danger, of wild beasts, of unforgiving terrain, but we the people of Oakhaven believe in hospitality. We believe in sharing the beauty of our home, the warmth of our community. This ceremony, it is a tradition passed down through generations. It is a way of saying you are welcome here. You are safe here. We offer you a taste of our culture, a glimpse of our spirit. We hope that you will see the rift not as a place of fear, but as a place of wonder, a place of peace.
Danny: Right on, Lani. Exactly.
Narrator: Lani’s words, filled with earnest sincerity, painted a picture of Oakhaven as a haven of tranquility, a beacon of hope amidst the rugged peaks. It was a vision she desperately wanted to share, a vision she hoped would dispel the shadows of doubt and fear.
Danny: Mm. Mm, this is actually pretty good.
Lani: Oh, that’s so kind of you to say that, Mr. Rose. I strongly encouraged the kitchen crew to season the food well. A little herb and spice makes everything nice.
Danny: Mm. Mm. I wish them well on their journey of culinary discovery.
Lani: I don’t…
Danny: And look at you, Miss Speech. You did a great job, Lani. I was really impressed.
Lani: Ugh, you’re so sweet. I must have given that same speech a dozen times.
Danny: Wow. I’m sure that, uh, that, that must be pretty profitable for the village, I assume.
Lani: Not at all. But I still wanna see the change in our rift. I love these beautiful peaks and valleys. I cherish the nature and our neighboring villages. God has blessed this place. It’s special.
Danny: I knew I had a good feeling about you, Lani. That means you’re doing the work.
Lani: We try.
Danny: Sounds like you actually care about the rift. It’s nice to find genuine people out in the wilderness.
Lani: Oh?
Danny: I’m just kidding. I’m just kidding. It’s, it’s not that wild here, but it definitely is, uh, different than Harbortown. I’m sorry, that, that came out completely wrong.
Lani: You’re being silly, but I get what you mean.
Danny: You know, this stew is delicious. Mm. What kind of meat is this?
Lani: It’s yak from our own herd. We raise them in the high pastures.
Danny: Well, it’s… Mm, mm. Well, it’s flavorful. Mm. Excuse me. And I’m serious. Everything here is so vibrant, the colors, the smells.
Lani: The rift is full of surprises. Each village has its own unique traditions, its own way of life.
Danny: Mm. Now… Mm, excuse me. Now, that much I did know. This isn’t my first time out in the rift, but I just don’t remember Oakhaven. Is this a relatively new village? You know what? Tell me something, Lani. Uh, tell me something about some of these other villages.
Lani: Well, to the east, there’s Oakcrest. They’re known for their intricate wood carvings. And to the west, there’s Stone Summit. They’re a bit more reclusive. They mostly keep to themselves.
Danny: I’ve heard of Stone Summit, and I do believe I’ve met a merchant from Oakcrest. Very, uh, nice guy.
Lani: Yes, Stone Summit is, they’re a bit of a mystery, but Oakhaven, we’re always happy to welcome visitors.
The missing elder
Danny: You mentioned an elder earlier. I still haven’t seen her. She here?
Sammy: Guy’s asking a lot of questions.
Lani: Sammy, it’s okay. He’s a guest, and I’m the ambassador. He asks, I answer.
Danny: Apologies. I, I wasn’t trying to stir any trouble or anything like that. I was just curious is all.
Sammy: Sorry, stranger. I’m just weary of outsiders prying us open like clams, plucking away at our-
Lani: Sammy. Sorry, Mr. Rose. He means well. To answer your question, there is no elder, not anymore.
Danny: I’m sorry? Uh, uh, what do you mean? What happened?
Villager — attribution uncertain: First, we need you to make us a promise, stranger.
Danny: A promise? What, what do you-
Villager — attribution uncertain: As I’m sure you’re aware, all incorporated villages are required to have an appointed elder. Those that don’t are not eligible for the monthly stipend donated by the New Republic Oakhaven was incorporated three generations ago with the elder’s grandfather.
Lani: Elder Leah, my grandmother, she passed away two years ago.
Danny: Okay, and my condolences, but doesn’t that put Lani here directly in line to be the next elder of the village? Am I missing something here?
Villagers / Lani — exchange: Poor Lani. Well, Mr. Rose, uh, well, you see, I, uh, well-
David: Lani’s adopted stranger. She’s not Leah’s granddaughter by blood. Leah’s daughter passed early in life, and she found little Lani here, [unclear phrase], flowing down the river in a small basket, a gift from the sea. Buddha bless it, Lani really is something else.
Lani: Thank you, David, and you as well, Sammy. We’ve all been trying to keep up the pretense for the village, the New Republic. They send us aid, but only as long as Elder Leah is still here.
Villager — attribution uncertain: We had no choice. It was the only way to survive. We’re not strong enough to protect ourselves. Please, traveler, you have to understand. We’re not trying to deceive anyone. We’re just trying to survive, but it’s getting harder and harder, especially now with-
Danny: With the bandits, right?
Lani: Yes. They take what they want. They instill fear, and I, I don’t know how much longer we can keep this up.
Danny: This Kai-Lung, he seems particularly forceful.
Lani: He is the Iron Fist, after all, or at least that’s what they say.
Danny: You have your suspicions, Lani?
Lani: What do you mean?
Danny: Is that what they say, or is that what he says? I mean, has anyone here actually seen Kai-Lung fight, really seen him?
Lani: Well, he’s strong. We’ve seen that. And he knows all those fancy moves.
Danny: Fancy moves can be deceiving. True skill, true strength, it’s not always about the show.
Lani: Are you saying you don’t think he’s really Kai-Lung?
Danny: I’m saying I’d like to see for myself. Perhaps a demonstration is in order.
Bandits at dawn
Narrator: And so, as the first rays of dawn painted the hills surrounding Oakhaven in hues of gold and rose, a spectacle of, let’s call it martial misapplication unfolded. High above the village on a rocky outcrop, Ming Mace, Sharp Fang Felix, and Isaac Stonesong- How’s that? … the self-proclaimed terror of the rift, were engaged in what Ming at least believed to be a rigorous training session.
Ming: No, Isaac, your striking cobra is more like a confused earthworm. Your stance is all wrong. You’re wobbling like a, a, well, a confused earthworm.
Isaac: Just let me practice, Ming. You haven’t even moved a muscle.
Ming: What’s that, Felix? You think you can do better? Don’t be ridiculous. You can’t even talk. How would you teach us the proper forms? You’re saying I have poor form, you dirty dog.
Isaac: Don’t strike Felix. He’s not wrong, Ming.
Ming: You’re both fools. I’ve been conserving my chi. You two are wasting yours. I must stay sharp to uphold the, the legacy of Kai-Lung.
Narrator: There’s an awkward silence before Ming tries to resume the training session.
Ming: Remember, Felix, the whispering crane must be executed with precision. Not like that. You look like a, a constipated pigeon.
Isaac: I’m warning you, Ming, strike him again, and this session becomes a match.
Ming: Don’t be absurd. I am demonstrating the correct form. You know what your problem is, Isaac? You lack the, the inner ear for martial arts. It’s all about the chi, the flow.
Isaac: And you lack tact, you arrogant prick.
Ming: What the-
Danny challenges the imposter
Danny: Round and round you all go. Where you’ll stop, no one knows. Personally, my money’s on the strong, silent type over there.
Isaac: It’s the guy from earlier, Ming. Mr. Hero.
Danny: I believe a proper introduction is in order. Danny [unclear epithet], fighting style jaded fist of steel, and you are not Kai-Lung. That much is certain. Way of the jaded fist.
Ming: I am Kai-Lung, and you will show me some respect.
Danny: I respect those that respect others. Respect is earned, Ming.
Ming: I’m warning you, Rose. If you don’t cease this mocking of my integrity, I’ll beat some respect into you.
Danny: Prove it.
Ming: Prove it? I, I don’t have to prove anything.
Danny: Show me your boulder-shattering strike, or show me your iron mountain stance. Show me anything that resembles the skill of Kai-Lung.
Isaac: Ming?
Ming: Quiet, Isaac. I’m thinking.
Isaac: He, he’s just conserving his energy.
Danny: Conserving his energy for what? Running?
Ming: You’re not helping, Felix.
Danny: You’re a fraud, and you’re done pretending.
Ming: Ah, screw this. Let’s get him.
Danny / bandits — combat exchange: You know, all bad kung fu aside, you all have potential. It’s misplaced You’re a… And you have horrible judgment, by the way. The real Kai-Lung would wipe you all out in a single stroke, FYI.
Isaac: Come on, Ming, get up.
Ming / Danny — exchange: Ouch! Ow! Ow! Geez! Oh, brother, what a big baby.
Danny: As for you two over there, is everyone okay?
Isaac: Ah, my neck. Feels like you broke it.
Danny: Geez, I thought I was holding back. Maybe not. Whoops. Felix? Or should I say Sancho? What about you? Any injuries? Oh, thank you, Sancho.
Ming: Felix, you little kiss-up.
Isaac: Ming, enough already.
Ming: Isaac, I-
A chance to make amends
Isaac: Aren’t you tired of pretending? I agree with Felix on this one. There’s got to be a way to both make a living and live with honor.
Danny: As I said before, you all have some sort of potential. It’s gotta be cultivated though, and you can’t use it to oppress people. Ming, I’m looking at you. Isaac, you, you’ve gotta be a little more, I don’t know, have some integrity. These people are, are hurting right now. There’s not a lot of money or food. They need someone to protect them, not oppress them.
Ming / Isaac — overlapping dialogue: Well- Shut up and listen, Ming.
Danny: You have strength and a certain, hmm, enthusiasm, but, uh, you’re using it to bully and steal. That’s not strength, that’s weakness.
Bandit: Ouch. What do you want from us?
Danny: Oh, so kind of you to ask. I want you to make amends.
Bandit: Make amends?
Danny: I want you to use that enthusiasm to protect Oakhaven and not oppress it.
Bandit: Protect it from what?
Danny: From anyone who tries to take advantage of them, from anyone who tries to pretend to be someone they’re not.
Bandit: Why would we do that?
Isaac: Ming.
Danny: Because you owe them. Because you have the chance to be something more than thieves and bullies, and because everyone deserves a second chance, Ming, including you.
Captain Sammy
Lani: So you’re Ming Mace, not Kai-Lung?
Ming: I’m afraid so, miss. Look, we’re real sorry for what we done to you and the other villagers here, see? We brought back most of the gold we’ve stolen. Would’ve been all of it had old Felix here not eaten it up. Guy’s small, but he’s got an appetite. Uh, he, uh, also apologizes.
Sammy: Are you kidding me? We’re supposed to just overlook the weeks of torment these three ruffians inflicted upon us? Never.
Lani: Sammy.
Danny: Sammy, you make a good point, but Oakhaven needs protectors. People use their strength to protect others. These three are no different.
Sammy: Exactly, because these three are rotten to the core. What’s stopping them from reverting back to their wicked nature the moment you leave, Rose?
Danny: Hmm. Oh, come now, Mr. Sammy. There’s gotta be something we can do to convince you all. Even the crooked tree can grow a straight branch.
Lani: I wanna believe them, Mr. Rose. I really do, I just-
Ming: Give us a chance to prove it to you, miss, please. We’ll do anything, anything. We just want the opportunity to start over and live our lives as honest men. Please.
Sammy: My goodness. On one condition, and I think Lani here will agree. Let us appoint someone to direct you three, a captain, someone who will organize and mobilize you all around this village as its protectors.
Lani: Agreed, Sammy. I nominate you.
Danny: Bingo.
Ming / Isaac — exchange: Oh, man, looks like Sammy’s got his work cut out for him, doesn’t he? What’s our first mission, sir?
Sammy: Me, with these three weirdos? Hell, no. Lani, you really ought not to.
Danny: I second that nomination. Congratulations, Sammy. Or should I say Captain Sammy?
Lani: Yay, we gotta celebrate, uh, all of this. More food.
Ming: Hear that, Felix? I could get used to honest living.
Isaac: Agreed.
Ming: Boy, for someone who doesn’t talk, you know just what to say, Felix.
Danny: Ming, Isaac, Felix, sounds like the three of you have a chance to grow anew. Don’t squander this opportunity. There may not be another one.
Lani: Come on, everyone. Let’s prepare a feast for our moment of reconciliation here.
Unidentified villager: Let’s.
Sammy: Oh, how did I get stuck being the captain of these three buffoons? Gods be merciful. I need a drink.
The road calls again
Narrator: Amidst the silent contemplation that followed Danny’s words, a delicate seed of hope was planted. Whether it would bloom into redemption or wither in the harsh realities of the rift remained to be seen. But for Danny Rose, the jaded fist, his path continued onward. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the hills, and the road called to him once more, a road that always led to the next town, the next mystery, the next chance to make a difference. He left Oakhaven as he found it, a place of simple people and complex struggles, but now perhaps a place with a chance for a brighter future. As he walked, he carried with him the echo of a question: Could even the most lost souls find their way back to the light? And so, with that question lingering in the air, Danny Rose continued his journey, leaving Oakhaven to find its own way, to forge its own destiny. As for him, Rose was still on the trail of Marta, hoping to find a cure for his friend, the real Kai-Lung, as well as a way to bring peace of mind back to Harbortown, his home.
A letter from the Old Kingdom
Messenger: Mr. Rose.
Danny: Huh?
Messenger: Mr. Rose, I bring news from the Old Kingdom, a letter from the renowned Kai-Lung.
Danny: Oh my God, not this again.
