Cold open — Harbortown

Danny Rose: Boy, Harbortown always smells the same. Fish, seaweed, and a hint of fear these days. I sure hope Mei’s keeping an eye on things, and I hope that tea is holding. Well, no time for sentiment now. Kai-Lung needs me. Okay, time to pick up the pace.

[Opening theme: music with Japanese vocals. Lyrics are not included.]

Introduction

Raymond Getty — show announcer: You’re listening to Way of the Jaded Fist, a Project Zion Theatre original. Danny Rose embarks on a new journey, seeking a cure to the curse of the Iruke. And Marta, she may very well be Harbortown’s saving grace. I’m Raymond Getty, your show announcer. Thanks for listening, and enjoy the show.

Earlier that day — the Jade Lantern Inn

Narrator: We’ll get back to who or what may be lying in wait for our hero, Danny Rose. But first, let’s go back to earlier that day.

Narrator: The morning light, a pale imitation of the vibrant hues it once held, struggled to penetrate the grime on the Jade Lantern Inn’s windows, casting long, skeletal shadows across the dusty floor. Mei, perched on a stool, watched the play of light and shadow on the floorboards, the rhythmic creak of the floorboards mirroring the unsettling beat of her own heart.

Narrator: Danny, his movements deliberate and almost ritualistic, meticulously packed his belongings, the silence broken only by the soft clinking of metal against leather. He selected a few dried rations, a small flask of water, his trusty throwing knives, and most importantly, Storm’s Fury, his bo staff, carefully wrapping it in a length of old sailcloth.

Narrator: He then added a small, intricately carved wooden figurine, a gift from a long-forgotten friend, and a worn leather pouch containing a few precious coins and a small silver locket. Danny paused, his hand hovering over the satchel, a fleeting sadness in his eyes. He turned to Mei, his gaze searching hers.

Danny Rose: Don’t look at me like that. I have to try, Mei, for Kai-Lung and for Harbortown.

Mei: But what if, what if you don’t find Marta? What if you’re gone too long?

Danny Rose: I’ll be fine, Mei. I’ve faced worse than a few rough seas.

Mei: Well, I guess this is… Well, I guess this is-

Danny Rose: No goodbyes, remember? I’ll see you soon, Mei.

Narrator: He picked up his satchel and slung it over his shoulder. With a final glance around the inn, a place that had been his home for so many years, Danny headed towards the door. The wind howls outside, a mournful sound that echoes the uncertainty in his own heart. But he pushes forward, his resolve firm. He has a mission, and he wouldn’t let anything stand in his way.

The road — Widower’s Creek

Narrator: He pushes on, the coastal path winding through dense foliage. As the sun begins to set, he crests a small hill and stops short. Below him lies a village, not bustling with life, but eerily silent. Houses stand abandoned, their windows boarded up. A thick, unnatural silence hangs over the scene, broken only by the mournful cries of gulls.

Danny Rose: Widower’s Creek. Wow. Been seven years since the last time I walked across these plains. Something’s off though, I think.

Narrator: He cautiously descends the hill, his senses on high alert. As he approaches the village, an unsettling stillness pervades the air. No children’s laughter, no barking dogs, no sounds of life. It’s as if time itself has been frozen.

Danny Rose: Uh-oh. If this is who I think it is…

Narrator: Suddenly…

[Unclear vocal cue at 06:50.]

Master Fong appears

Narrator: Standing there before our hero was a wizened figure with skin the color of parchment and eyes that burn with an unnatural green fire. His long white hair is matted with blood, and his robes are tattered and stained. He carries himself with an air of ancient power, a chilling aura that precedes him.

Narrator: His name is Master Fong, known by his minions as the Emperor of the Jiangshi, and known by his countless innocent victims as the Vampire Butcher of Himalaya Rift.

Master Fong: Well, well, well. Look who it is, the renowned Danny Rose. Still clinging to life, I see.

Danny Rose: Master Fong, long time no see, old friend. I’ve heard of my past catching up with me, but this is a little ridiculous. And I see you brought some of your buddies with you. How can I be of service to the Emperor of the Dead?

Master Fong: Officially, all that pass through Widower’s Creek must pay tribute.

Danny Rose: All right.

Master Fong: Unofficially, I want you dead.

Danny Rose: While I certainly appreciate the honesty, vampire, I made a promise to someone, and so I don’t die until I’ve kept that promise.

The Jiangshi attack

Master Fong: Kill him. His life is now forfeit.

Danny Rose: Bring it, Scourge of the Earth.

Narrator: The Jiangshi circled around Danny as he clutched Storm’s Fury. He twirled it around to and fro, and the weapon was suddenly covered in a bright blue flame.

Danny Rose: You just gonna stand there making noise, or are you gonna come at me?

Narrator: The Jiangshi attacked all at once. Danny, at the speed of sound, struck all three. Sharp, lethal blows.

Danny Rose: Is that the best you’ve got, Master Fong? Because if it is, pack it up and go home.

Master Fong: Such insolence. Minions, bring me his head.

Danny Rose: I’m not gonna be able to keep this up all day. Gonna have to start looking for an exit plan real soon here.

Danny Rose: Well now, and here I thought you were all training in between preying on the weak and innocent. Tsk tsk, Fong.

The escape

Master Fong: Y- you’ll pay double for your continued-

Danny Rose: I hate to leave, but I’ve got more important things to attend to. I’ll see you soon, Master Fong.

Master Fong: Coward. I will see you again, Rose, and you will pay me back in blood.

[Unclear vocal cue at 09:54.]

Narrator: Danny redoubled his speed, racing through the abandoned village without ceasing. He knew if he stopped or turned back for even a moment, Master Fong and his band of Jiangshi would overwhelm him in an instant.
